¡Bienvenidos a segundo grado! ~ Welcome to second grade!
Hello! My name is Brooke Wood and this is my eighth year teaching 2nd grade Spanish Immersion at Clearview Elementary. I graduated from St. Cloud State University with a major in Elementary Education and a K-8 license in Spanish. I began studying Spanish in high school, and through college, in which I studied abroad in Concepción, Chile for a semester. I am eager to start the school year and I am really excited to get to know you and your child!
The following is some important information about our class:
1. Math:Every Friday, math homework will be sent home. This homework is meant to be reinforcement of the week’s math lessons. If your child is having trouble, I can help them in the morning before school! Completed math homework is due the Friday of the following week. You can expect 2 sheets every week.
2. Reading: Students are expected to read 100 minutes a week. That could divide out to 20 minutes every school night. Ten of those minutes should be in Spanish and 10 should be in English. I will be sending home a reading log on Fridays for your child to record the title of the book they are reading each day and the minutes they read. I will send home a short story on a single sheet of paper each week to give your child at least one extra Spanish text at home. You may keep these. Repeated readings will improve your child’s reading fluency! Please sign off on the reading log so that I know they are being held accountable. The log will be expected to be turned in on the following Friday. Reading aloud to your child can also count as reading minutes. Don’t get too hung up on the details, the important thing is that you and your child are making reading a priority!
3. Spelling:
Spelling words will be sent home on Friday afternoons. Spelling tests will be given the following Friday.
4. After school schedule changes: You must send a note if your after school plans change. If you do not send a note or call, then your child will go to the place they are normally scheduled to go. If you call, make sure you speak to me personally or reach someone at the office who can relay the message. This way we can assure that I have received your updated schedule change. Do not send an email or leave a voicemail with last minute changes because I may not get to my email/phone in time that day to address the change.
5. Behavior Expectations: These expectations are rule we will follow in order to help each child succeed.
Our classroom rules:
In our classroom, students who are not following the rules of our community will receive a warning. The second time I have to remind them to follow the rules, they may be asked to take a break. This means that child will take a break away from the group. Once they have regained self-control they will resume with the day’s activities. If they continue to break the rules, they will receive a third warning. At this point I will hold a conference with that child to discuss the behavior that occurred and come up with a plan of action to help correct that behavior. A note will be sent home informing you of the conference. Please discuss the note with your child before signing and returning it to school the following day.
6. Birthdays We celebrate birthdays in our classroom on or near the students’ birthday. If you wish to bring something to share with the class it must be a store bought treat. Please do not send any food that have peanuts in them.
Please remember that there are 24 students in the classroom.
7. Prize box: If you have any erasers, pencils, stickers, or small toys you would like to donate to our classroom prize box, it would be much appreciated! I use the prize box all year so at any point throughout the school year donations are welcome!
8. United Arts Schedule Day 1: Art Day 2: Music Day 3: Gym
This is a rotating schedule so there are no fixed days for any particular class.
Please make sure that your child has a pair of tennis shoes at school each day. J
Library: Tuesday
Computer Lab: Friday
9. Lunch time: Your child will be eating lunch at 11:15.
10. School Snack: Students are welcome to bring their own snack to have mid-morning. Do not bring snacks containing peanuts. Please discuss with your child if he or she will be having a snack at school. Please send sensible snacks (fruit, veggies, pretzels, crackers, no cookies or candy) and sensible portions for your child.
11. Dismissal Procedures: If your child is going to be picked up by you or a designated guardian they will be walked out the front door after the buses have left. I will walk bus riders outside to get on his/her respective bus. Best time to reach me:
If there is ever anything you would like to discuss you may reach me before 7:20 or after 2:20. I am really looking forward to this year!
Feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns.
Sincerely,
Profesora Brooke
